Sizzling Summer recipe tips
In Summer everyone loves eating alfresco when we get that little bit of sunshine; it is a well know fact that everything tastes better in the open air. Outdoor eating comes in all forms: traditional English picnics, delightfully messy children's parties or a Mediterranean spread beneath the sun, but keeping food and drinks fresh and cool in warm summer weather is the challenge.
Following these simple tips can help you make the most of your food this summer:
Salad tips
In the UK we are guilty of throwing away nearly half the salad we buy.
- If your salad is tired and wilted, put it in a bowl of water with a couple of ice cubes for at least half an hour. When you spin it, you'll find that it's become nice and crispy again.
Food on the move
- Taking your own food and drinks for a long car journey is a great idea and will save you pounds at the service stations.
- Make sure you keep food in a cool bag or ice box with plenty of ice packs.
- Store perishable foods in airtight boxes with lids or food bags. Airtight boxes allow you to transport several elements, such as dressings without the risk of spill or mess.
BBQ's
- If you are cooking barbecues keep it simple and resist serving food before it is cooked thoroughly.
Keep guests happy with crisps or salad to pick at while you cook. - If you are having a buffet, only bring it out of the fridge at the last minute, so it stays fresh for longer.
- If there are any leftovers from the buffet or barbecue put them in the fridge as soon as you can.
Picnic Planning
- Pack perishable food from the fridge at the last minute into the chill boxes and bags.
- Cold boiled potatoes make a fantastic potato salad so make use of last night's veggies.
- Use reusable containers and utensils instead of disposables.
